College roundup: Updates on Miner, Meyers, Kauffman, Weinfurtner, Alexander

A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Miner sixth at CCIW Meet

Johnelle Miner, a 2016 Stratford High School graduate, is a senior on the Carthage College women’s cross country team.

Miner, who also runs track for the Lady Reds, finished sixth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Meet at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill., on Nov. 2. She ran the 6-kilometer race in 23:01.2 to earn all-conference first-team honors.

Carthage finished seventh out of the nine teams at the CCIW Meet, which was won by Wheaton (Ill.). Dianne Barajas of North Central (Ill.) won the women’s race in 22:19.2.

Molly Meyers

Meyers scores first goal for Long Island

Molly Meyers, a 2019 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a freshman on the Long Island (N.Y.) University women’s hockey team.

Meyers has played in six of the Sharks’ eight games this season, through Thursday, scoring one goal. Meyers scored in a 9-2 loss to Yale on Oct. 25.

Long Island is 1-7 so far this season and play at Sacred Heart (Conn.) on Friday and at home against them on Saturday.

Kauffman, who transferred from Eastern Michigan after that school dropped its wrestling program, placed seventh at last season’s Midwest Athletic Conference Championships and ended the year with a 10-13 record.

Kauffman, a two-time WIAA Division 3 individual state champion who was a perfect 133-0 for Stratford, is wrestling at 157 pounds this season.

Northern Illinois opens its dual meet season at home against Bucknell on Friday, Nov. 15, and will host the Huskie Duals against Harper and Rider on Nov. 17.

Weinfurnter is a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman who has appeared in all nine games this season for the Warriors.

Alexander is a redshirt freshman tight end. He has played in one game this year.

Winona State is 7-2 overall and in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a home game against Augustana (S.D.) on Saturday and at Concordia (Minn.) University on Nov. 16 remaining on its schedule.
