TOMAH – The Marshfield boys hockey team split a pair of games to finish second at the Tomah Invitational this weekend.

Marshfield won the opener on Friday, rolling past Black River Falls 8-2, and lost in the championship game to Tomah/Sparta 4-3 on Saturday.

In Friday’s game, Marshfield scored the game’s first five goals to open up a big lead.

Sawyer Schindler scored in the first period, and Evan Weister scored twice in the second period as the Tigers poured in four goals. Dominic Lange and Peyton Smith also scored for Marshfield as it went up 5-0.

Ben Lawyer added a pair of goals and Henry Hoerneman had a short-handed score in the third period for Marshfield.

A.J. Trierweiler had 23 saves in goal for the Tigers.

Max Heller had a goal in the first period and Weister scored in the second to give Marshfield a 2-1 lead over Tomah/Sparta, but couldn’t hold on.

After Tomah/Sparta went ahead, Schindler scored a short-handed goal for the Tigers at the 7:08 mark of the third period to tie the game at 3-3, however, Tomah/Sparta’s John Christen hit the game winner 2:12 later.

Trierweiler had 22 saves for Marshfield (1-1-1).

““We learned some tough lessons tonight,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman said of Saturday’s contest. “We made some mistakes on the defensive end
that hurt us. Our young players need to learn from those as we enter both Wisconsin Valley Conference play and sectional play. Offensively, we had quality chances tonight, we just could not find the back of the net. We like the balance that we are seeing on our team while watching some players make the jump from JV to prominent varsity roles successfully. We will learn from this game, and come back stronger next week.”

Marshfield’s next game is Tuesday at Chippewa Falls.
