Columbus Catholic boys basketball loses opener, beats Assumption at Cranberry Classic

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a split at the Cranberry Classic at Assumption High School over the weekend.

The Dons lost their season opener to Port Edwards 70-68 on Friday and defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 58-41 on Saturday.

Columbus Catholic will open its Cloverbelt Conference East Division schedule with its home opener against Colby on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

With the win Saturday, Columbus Catholic coach Joe Koniecnzy earned his 300th varsity coaching win of his career, 276 of which have come as the boys head coach at Columbus.

In Friday’s game, Columbus led 37-31 at halftime but couldn’t hold on. Quinton Tranel scored 32 points for Port Edwards. Tom Nystrom led the Dons with 23 points and Wyatt Drexler added 18 points.

Drexler poured in 28 points in the Dons’ win on Saturday. Columbus led 37-29 at halftime and put the game away by holding Assumption to 12 points in the second half.
