Marshfield’s Taylor Varsho qualifies for WIAA state girls tennis tournament

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield junior Taylor Varsho qualified for the WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament by taking second place Wednesday at the Division 1 sectional at Boson Courts.

Varsho (21-8) won her first two matches before losing in the No. 1 singles championship match to Annie Reagan (30-4) of Eau Claire Memorial.

Victoria Jensen placed second at No. 3 singles to finish her sophomore season at 9-3.

The Tigers’ final sectional qualifier, No. 2 singles player Megan Hayes, lost her semifinal match and came back to take third and finish her season at 15-8.

The top four players at No. 1 singles and doubles and the top finisher at No. 2 singles and doubles at the sectional meet move on to the WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison on Oct. 14-16.

Additional qualifiers will be announced by the WIAA on Friday.

Eau Claire Memorial won the team title with 50 points to move on to the state team meet. The Old Abes won all four singles titles – Reagan, Sydney Wolfe at No. 2, Beth Richmond at No. 3 and Victoria Teschendorf at No. 4 – as well as at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Riley Larson and Stephanie Smith won at No. 2 doubles and Gina Siedow and Sarah Israel were champions at No. 3 doubles.

The WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament is in Madison on Oct. 22-23.
