College roundup: Updates on Hertel brothers, Fravert, Baierl

Hertel brothers earn top finishes at WIAC Tourney

Mitch Hertel won the 165-pound title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Feb. 14 at La Crosse, claiming his second conference title of his career.

The senior, a 2015 graduate of Marshfield High School, also won a conference title in 2018. He defeated Nathan Wynsma of UW-Platteville 6-2 in the finals to help the Eagles to their fourth-straight WIAC crown.

Nolan Hertel, a 2019 graduate of Marshfield, finished second at 157 pounds for La Crosse at the conference meet. He went 3-1 in the tournament, losing in the finals by injury default to teammate Grant Zamin.

La Crosse will compete at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional at Augsburg (Minn.) University on Feb. 28.

Fravert continues final season at Oshkosh

Fravert leads the Titans, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, in five major categories.

Fravert has started all 23 games this season for Oshkosh, averaging 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game, all team-highs. He also had made a team-best 54 3-pointers and is shooting 79.6 percent from the free thorw line and 46.2 percent overall from the field.

Oshkosh, riding a three-game winning streak, is 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the WIAC. The Titans will wrap up their regular-season schedule this week with games at home against Whitewater on Wednesday and at River Falls on Saturday. The WIAC Tournament begins Feb. 25.

Baierl wrapping up career at Franciscan

Abby Baierl, a 2016 Marshfield Columbus Catholic graduate, has started every game this season for the Franciscan University women’s basketball team.

Franciscan, an NCAA Division III school in Steubenville, Ohio, is 9-14 overall this season and 7-11 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Baierl is averaging 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, while making 41 3-pointers and is shooting 85 percent at the free throw line for the Barons.

Franciscan wraps up its regular-season schedule with games at Penn State-Altoona on Monday and at Medaille (N.Y.) in Buffalo on Saturday.
