Weinfurter pours in 38 points as Auburndale boys basketball crushes Newman Catholic

WAUSAU – Cooper Weinfurter drilled nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Auburndale boys basketball team to an 86-46 win over Wausau Newman Catholic on Thursday night at Newman Catholic High School.

Weinfurter was 12-for-21 from the field, including 9 of 17 from 3-point range, and made five of six free throws to score his 38 points for the Apaches.

Fletcher Raab added 18 points and Hunter Wright scored 11 for Auburndale, which finishes the regular season at 18-4 overall and 13-3 in the Marawood Conference South Division.

Mason Prey and Ben Bates each had 10 points for Newman Catholic (4-18, 3-13 Marawood South).

Newman Catholic will play a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal at Port Edwards on Tuesday. Auburndale earned a first-round bye and will host either Crandon or Phillips in a Division 4 regional semifinal on Friday, March 6.
