MADISON – Seven area wrestlers will grapple for state titles after winning semifinal matches Friday night at the 2020 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
Stratford will send three into the finals, including two defending champions and an undefeated wrestler.
Sophomore Gavin Drexler improved to 49-0 this season with an 11-3 major decision over Javis Pinter (44-4) of Cochrane-Fountain City at 126 pounds to advance to his first state final for the Tigers.
Stratford seniors Max Schwabe and Trevor Dennee will compete for their second-straight Division 3 state titles. Schwabe (47-2) beat Zach Foley of Cochrane-Fountain City 3-0 in sudden-victory overtime at 132 pounds, and Dennee (48-1) pinned Isaac Banker of Bonduel at the second-period buzzer to advance.
Also moving on to championship matches on Saturday is Auburndale senior Dylan Baird. Baird (34-11) beat Aiden Brosinski of De Soto, 11-6, in his Division 3 138-pound semifinal, and will take on Karson Casper (42-4) of Coleman in the finals. Casper beat Baird, 3-1, in last week’s sectional championship bout.
Stevens Point’s Justin Groshek continued his undefeated senior campaign, beating Michael Smith of Appleton North 10-1 in the Division 1 113-pound semifinals. Groshek (45-0) will take on Alec Hunter (41-1) of Oshkosh West in the finals.
Medford senior Jake Rau will go for his second-straight Division 2 220-pound state title after he edged Marcus Orlandoni (39-3) of North Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs, 5-3. Rau (37-2) will face Nick Roler (45-5) of Antigo in the championship match.
Edgar’s Ethan Heil, who finished second at state a year ago, will get a chance to redeem himself as he won an 11-2 major decision over Cole Ebert (46-3) of Reedsville in the Division 3 220-pound semifinals. Heil (30-0) will face Aaron Ragels (34-3) of Fennimore in the finals.
Seven other area wrestlers lost their semifinal matches Friday night and will move into the consolation bracket on Saturday morning.
In Division 1, Preston Spray (44-4) of Wisconsin Rapids lost at 106 pounds to Greyson Clark (44-6) of Kaukauna, 6-4, and Marshfield sophomore Keagan Cliver (30-8) lost his 120-pound semifinal to Mason Campshure (37-7) of Kaukauna.
Luke Dux (35-5) of Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal dropped his Division 2 106-pound semifinal to Rhett Koening (50-6) of Prairie du Chien.
Stratford’s two other semifinal qualifiers lost on Friday. Jacob Heiden (41-9) lost to Aiden Vandenbush (48-0) of Random Lake, 19-4, and Devin Dennee (47-3) fell to Nolan Springer (39-2) of Mineral Point, 6-5.
Also in Division 3, Peter Esser (27-14) of Pittsville lost to Brayden Sonnentag (38-1) of Cadott, 8-0, at 106 pounds, and Connor Westfall (32-8) of Athens lost a 4-2 decision to Shamus Mclain (41-1) of Coleman at 195 pounds.
Saturday’s finals will be televised live starting with the “Walk of Champions” at 5:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Wisconsin.
Consolation semifinals, where the winners move on to the third-place match and losers fall into the fifth-place match, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kohl Center.
