Five Stratford wrestlers, SC’s Ackman, Auburndale’s Baird move on to semifinals at WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament

MADISON – Eleven more local wrestlers qualified for the semifinals at the 2020 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Friday.

In Division 2, Luke Dux (35-4) of Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal and Jake Rau (36-2) of Medford won their quarterfinal matches to move on to the semifinals Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Dux earned a 6-4 win over Parker Heintz of Lodi at 106 pounds, and Rau pinned Mac Strand of Appleton Savier in 3:24 of their 220-pound match.

In Division 3, nine area wrestlers moved on to the semifinals, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

Peter Esser (27-13) of Pittsville at 106 pounds; Dylan Baird (33-11) of Auburndale at 138; Ethan Heil (29-0) of Edgar at 220; Connor Westfall (32-7) of Athens at 195; and five Stratford wrestlers won their Division 3 quarterfinal matches Friday afternoon.

Moving on for Stratford were: Gavin Drexler (48-0 at 126), Max Schwabe (46-2 at 132), Jacob Heiden (41-8 at 152), Devin Dennee (47-2 at 160), and Trevor Dennee (47-1 at 195).

Eight more wrestlers from the area clinched state tournament medals by moving on in the consolation bracket. These wrestlers will participate in consolation semifinals on Saturday morning, and battle for third- and fifth-place medals depending on the outcome.

Marshfield freshman Brett Franklin (28-6) won a pair of 132-pound Division 1 consolation matches Friday, including a pin of Austin Elger of Muskego in 3:58, to move on.

Fellow Marshfield freshman Hoyt Blaskowski was eliminated at 126 pounds after losing in the consolation quarterfinals and finishes the season with a 45-6 record.

Spencer/Columbus sophomore Treyton Ackman also won his consolation quarterfinal in Division 2 to guarantee a medal in his second trip to state. Ackman (42-6) pinned Taedon Nichols (39-6) of Luke/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren, in 2:22 at 120 pounds.

Neillsvile/Greenwood/Loyal freshman Gunner Hoffmann also is guaranteed a state medal after he won his Division 2 220-pound consolation quarterfinal with a second-period pin.

Karter Stuttgen (25-6) of Stratford moves on the Division 3 113-pound consolation bracket after an 11-5 win over Dominic Leintz of Clear Lake.

Also earning state medals by qualifying for the consolation semifinals are: Kale Roth of Stevens Point (40-10 at 120 pounds); Gabe Carter (42-2 at 170) and Orion Boe (45-2 at 220) of D.C. Everest; and Zach Irbarren (47-3 at 285) of Merrill.

A total of 13 area wrestlers will participate in the semifinals Friday night.
