Columbus Catholic girls basketball falls in WIAA Division 5 regional semifinals to Eleva-Strum

STRUM – Eleva-Strum clamped down on defense in the second half and pushed past Marshfield Columbus Catholic, winning 59-40 in a WIAA Division 5 girls basketball regional semifinal Friday night at Eleva-Strum High School.

No. 2 seed Eleva-Strum (17-6) will host No. 3 Cashton (20-4) in a regional final Saturday night.

Eleva-Strum held a slim 27-24 lead at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

Columbus Catholic (12-12) made only one basket from the field in the second half as it went to the free throw line time and again. However, the Dons made just 14 of 26 attempts and couldn’t bite into Eleva-Strum’s lead.

Annika Brown made 7 of 11 free throws and finished with 11 points to lead Columbus Catholic. Kelsey Moore made three 3-pointers and added nine points for the Dons.

Brianna Nelson scored 17 points, and Olivia Windjue and Kloe Hillestad each had 10 points for Eleva-Strum.
