Marshfield gymnastics places second at Division 1 sectional, earns WIAA state meet berth for second-straight year

EAU CLAIRE – For the second year in a row, the Marshfield gymnastics team is heading to state.

Marshfield finished second at the WIAA Division 1 sectional on Saturday at Eau Claire Memorial High School to secure a spot in next week’s state meet.

Holmen won the team title with a score of 139.925, with Marshfield second at 138.5. The Tigers edged Stevens Point by one-half point to earn the final of the two team qualifying spots at the 2020 WIAA State Gymnastics Meet, which will be held March 6-7 at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School. The team competition will be on Friday starting at 1 p.m. Individual competition is Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.

Marshfield finished eighth at the state meet last year.

Marshfield senior Gracie Holland, the defending all-around and vault state champion, will get a chance to defend her titles.

Holland won three events and the all-around title at the sectional. Holland won the vault (9.675), uneven bars (9.525), and balance beam (9.5), and was second in the floor exercise (9.3) to finish with an all-around score of 38.0, which was more than a point better than second-place finisher Caelen Lansing (36.672) of La Crosse Logan/Central.

Marshfield also had top-10 finishes from two gymnasts. Kyra Huff was eighth in the balance beam with a score of 8.7 and Hanna Merkel took eighth in the floor exercise with a score of 8.7.

Ellie Jensen took 11th in the beam (8.6), Merkel was 12th in the floor (8.7), and Alexis Mushel and Kim Backaus tied for 12th in the vault (8.8.) as well for Marshfield.
