Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids split WVC baseball doubleheader

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team opened its Wisconsin Valley Conference slate with a split of a doubleheader against Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.

The Tigers won Game 1 12-2 in six innings before Rapids pulled out a 10-9 win in the second game on a walk-off hit.

Marshfield is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Wisconsin Rapids is 2-4 and 1-3 in the Valley.

Logan Homolka had a complete game in the opener, striking out four, to earn the win for the Tigers. He did not walk a batter and had five shutout innings before allowing two runs in the top of the sixth.

Marshfield came back to score four in the bottom of the inning, ending the game due to the 10-run rule.

Homolka, and Adam Zee each had three hits, with Zee connecting on two doubles and driving in four runs. Simon Slade added two hits and two RBIs, and Jaden Wilhelm had a pair of RBIs as well for Marshfield.

Braden Lewis had two hits and drove in both of Rapids’ runs.

In Game 2, Wisconsin Rapids pulled out to a 6-1 lead before things got wild.

Marshfield scored four times in the fourth and added three more in the fifth, only to see Rapids score in each of those innings as well and hold a 9-8 lead.

Parker Weik drove in Homolka in the top of the sixth for Marshfield to tie the game at 9-9, and that held until the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs, Austin Junemann reached on an error, stole second and scored on Zach Schaeffer’s single to left to give Wisconsin Rapids the win and the split in the twinbill.

Homolka had four hits and two RBIs, and Will Fetting had a single, a double and three RBIs to lead the Marshfield offense.

Junemann and Ryan Huber each had three hits for the Raiders.
