WAUSAU – The Auburndale volleyball team pulled out a tight 3-1 decision over Wausau Newman Catholic in the Marawood Conference South Division opener for both teams on Tuesday at Newman Catholic High School.

Auburndale won 25-13, 26-24, 20-25, 27-25, in the hotly-contested battle to start the conference slate.

Josie Ertl had 23 kills and four service aces, Nicole Marth had 17 assists, 14 digs and five aces, and Ashlyn Grimm had 19 assists, seven kills and 10 digs for Auburndale.

Auburndale plays at home against Iola-Scandinavia for a nonconference match on Thursday before hosting its annual tournament on Saturday.
