Colby/Abbotsford outlasts Spencer softball in high-scoring contest

SPENCER – Colby/Abbotsford scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to outlast Spencer 13-10 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball slugfest on Friday at Spencer High School.

Colby/Abbotsford led 8-3 after scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, only to see Spencer close to within a run with four in the bottom of the inning.

The Hornets scored twice in the sixth before Spencer tied it with a three-run frame.

Colby/Abbotsford (4-4 overall and Cloverbelt East) was able to pull away in the top of the seventh and pitcher Tatum Bargender finished off the victory with a scoreless bottom of the inning.

Halie VanLuven and Bargender each had three hits and three RBI, Alea Graff had a double, a home run and three RBI, and Harrison Schmitt had two hits and two RBI for Colby/Abbotsford.

Samantha Soback, Kaelyn Schreiner and Jaci Cook all had two hits for Spencer, with Schreiner driving in three runs. The Rockets are now 0-6 and 0-3 in the Cloverbelt East.

Spencer will travel to Owen-Withee for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday. Colby/Abbotsford will not return to action until Thursday, May 5, at Marshfield Columbus Catholic.
