Stratford girls win title, boys finish second at Pittsville Cross Country Invitational

PITTSVILLE – Stratford’s top five runners finished in the nine as the Tigers won the girls team title at the Pittsville Cross Country Invitational on Thursday, opening up the 2022 season for a number of area teams.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Rory Salveson won the girls race in 21:52.1, 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Kayla Casperson of Stratford.

Breleigh Skaya took fourth (23:42.6), Ella Heidmann placed fifth (23:47.4), Samantha Mielke was seventh (24:33.6) and Kressa Wenzel finished ninth (25:15.2) to finish off Stratford’s strong showing.

Stratford finished with 27 points, well ahead of second-place Colby in the girls standings. Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Spencer had incomplete squads, while Auburndale didn’t compete in the girls portion of the invite.

Jenny Schneider led Columbus Catholic, finishing 28th in 28:40.4, with Katelyn Casperosn taking 31st in 29:04.1 and Sam Casperson ending up 34th in 29:19.8.

Rachel Neiman was 39th for Spencer in 29:34.3.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Isaac Scheer ran past his brother Andrew to win the boys race as the Dons placed fifth in the team standings. Isaac Scheer ran in 17:31.2, with Andrew Scheer taking second in 17:40.6.

Pittsville slipped past Stratford by one point to take the boys team championship, 64-65, with Auburndale finishing fourth with 87 and the Dons fifth with 99. Spencer had an incomplete squad.

Cree DeFoe led Stratford, taking fourth in 18:58.5 and teammate Lance Krieg was 10th in 19:46.3.

Mason White Eagle took ninth in 19:43.2 and Charles Jewell was 12th in 19:59.8 for Auburndale.

Spencer’s top runner waws Malachai Anderson, who finished 47th in 23:36.5.

Stratford and Spencer will compete at the Mosinee Invitational on Nine Mile Recreation Park in Rib Mountain, and Columbus Catholic will travel to the Loyal Invite on Tuesday. Auburndale is off until next Thursday, Sept. 1, when it will be at Nine Mile as well taking part in the Marathon Invitational.
