SPENCER – Manawa stuffed Spencer/Columbus on a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute to preserve a 20-18 victory in a Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division football game Friday night at Spencer High School.

Manawa took an eight-point lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass Tanner Nienhaus to Jake Timm with 10:05 to go in the fourth quarter.

Spencer/Columbus was able to put a drive together late, which was capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Teddy Meyer to Sullivan Melander with 25 seconds left. The Rockets need a two-point conversion to force overtime, but Melander was tackled short of the goal line, giving Manawa its first conference victory of the season.

Spencer/Columbus falls to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference, and will host Stratford for its final home game of the season on Oct. 4. Manawa is now 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference and will be at home against Amherst next Friday.

Melander had 142 yards rushing and scored all three touchdowns for the Rockets, which totaled 231 yards on the ground and outgained Manawa 262-181 overall.
