Columbus Catholic advances three to sectionals at WIAA Division 2 girls tennis subsectional

ALTOONA – Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s top two singles players and No. 1 doubles team qualified for sectionals after competition at the WIAA Division 2 girls tennis subsectional Tuesday at Altoona High School.

Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and making it to the finals in all other flights, move on to the Division 2 sectional meet Thursday at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire.

Columbus Catholic’s No. 1 singles player Maria Laura Garcia-Moya won her quarterfinal match over Sierra Oelke of Antigo 6-1, 6-1, and its No. 2 singles player Akosua Yeboah continued her undefeated season (13-0) with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of Kylie Soberg of Phillips and a 6-1, 6-2, win over Reagan Herdrich of Wausau Newman Catholic.

The Dons’ No. 1 doubles team of Declyn Tracy and Maria Elizabeth Garcia-Moya also advanced to the sectional with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Molly Neufeld and Elena Bussiere of Antigo.

Columbus’ Lizzy Gruenloh at No. 3 singles lost her first match in three sets, and Maggie Callaghan at No. 4 singles won a match in three sets before falling 6-0, 6-0, to Therese Kern of Eau Clarie Regis and were eliminated.

The Dons’ No. 2 doubles team of Denali Volkman and Evan Bauer, and the No. 3 doubles team of Emma Alcott and Madi Wittman were also eliminated. Alcott and Wittman won its first match in three sets over Lily Edison and Morgan Bergh of Regis, before falling 6-2, 6-0, to No. 1 seed Ryanna Hesselink of Keyliana Desantis of Altoona.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the champion at No. 2 singles and doubles at the sectional meet will qualify for the 2022 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison on Oct. 13-15.
