Columbus Catholic girls tennis earns two state touranment berths

EAU CLAIRE – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls tennis team is sending their No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles team to the state tournament after both won quarterfinal matches Thursday at the WIAA Division 2 Girls Tennis Sectional at Menard Tennis Center.

Maria Laura Garcia-Moya won a No. 1 singles quarterfinal over Kallahan Bowman of Rice Lake 6-3, 6-0, to earn a spot at the 2022 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament, which will be held Oct. 13-15 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Declyn Tracy and Maria Elizabeth Garcia-Moya earned a spot at state in No. 1 doubles as well for Columbus Catholic. The duo defeated Annabelle Fisk and Emma Johnson of Amery 6-1, 6-7 (5), 10-5, to qualify.

The top four finishers in the No. 1 flights, and the winner of the No. 2 flights earn state tournament berths.

Both Garcia-Moya at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team lost in semifinal matches.

Columbus Catholic’s Akosua Yeboah won a semifinal at No. 2 singles, beating Emma Stroshane of Osceola 6-0, 6-1, before losing in the finals to Josie Rechek of Altoona, 6-2, 6-2.

Altoona won the team sectional title to earn a berth in the 2022 WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament on Oct. 21-22 in Madison.
