MARSHFIELD – Abbey Besler scored twice and Paige Johnson and Kate Schumitsch each had a goal and an assist to lead the Marshfield girls hockey team to a 4-1 win over Baraboo on Tuesday in its home opener at the Marshfield Youth Ice and Recreation Arena.

The Tigers, who improved to 4-0 with the nonconference win, were clicking on all cylinders, Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel said.

“It was definitely our night,” Sparbel said. “Everything we have been working on in practice came together at just the right times. The girls ran good breakouts, passed the puck nicely and worked our power play very well.”

Schumitsch scored at the 14:28 mark of the first period and Besler had her first goal, off an assist from Johnson, at 6:24 of the second period to put the Tigers up 2-0.

“Offensively, Kate Schumitsch had a nice game scoring a short-handed goal and did an excellent job playing in a role of a defensive-minded forward and had some great back checking to help out our defense,” Sparbel said.

Baraboo responded with a goal 3½ minutes later, but Marshfield continued to control the puck and put the game away with two third-period goals.

Johnson scored at 6:01 and Besler at 13:08 to provide the final margin.

Marshfield outshot Baraboo 44-13 and Tigers goalie Ashley Bauer finished with 12 saves.

“I am so proud of these girls and how everyone is working as a team, they compliment one another very nicely,” Sparbel said.
