LA CROSSE – Marshfield’s Hoyt Blaskowski and Auburndale’s Sloan Welch earned individual titles at the two-day Bi-State Wrestling Classic, held at the La Crosse Civic Center on Thursday and Friday.
A total of 68 teams, including Marshfield, Auburndale, Stratford and Spencer/Columbus, competed at the tournament, which features many of the top-ranked teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Marshfield ended up with six top-seven finishes in all to take second place in the Division 1 team standings. Hastings (Minn.) won the D-1 team title with 328.5 points, with Marshfield second with 237.
Spencer/Columbus didn’t record a win in the event, while Stratford finished fourth (156 points) and Auburndale seventh (122.5 points) in the Division 3 standings, which was won by La Crosse Aquinas.
Blaskowski rolled through the 145-pound field to keep his undefeated season intact for Marshfield. The senior defeated Tucker Ginther of Caldeonia/Houston (Minn.) 4-1 in the championship match to improve to 21-0 this season.
Welch (21-1) took down Beckett Spilde of Stoughton 9-4 in the 220-pound title bout for Auburndale’s lone title.
Owen Griesbach finished second at 170 pounds for Marshfield, losing the championship match to Calvin Hargrove of La Crosse Aquinas, 13-6. Griesbach is now 19-2 this season.
Garrett Willuweit suffered his first two losses of the season at 160 pounds for Marshfield. After dropping a semifinal match, he lost to Aiden Erickson of Hastings 5-1 in the third-place match and falls to 20-2 overall.
Marshfield’s Caleb Dennee (19-3) defeated Stratford’s Ryan Becker (16-7) 7-5 in the fifth-place match at 152 pounds, and Brett Franklin (138 pounds) and Adrian Kruger (285) earned seventh-place finishes as well for Marshfield.
Stratford’s Jackson Ormond earned a runner-up finish at 195 pounds as he suffered his first loss of the season in the championship match to Hayden VanderVoort of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (Minn.) 3-1. Ormond is now 19-1.
Colin Cournoyer took eighth at 113 and Carter Lueck was 11th at 182 for Stratford.
Colton Weiler (19-3) finished fifth at 132 pounds and Derek Godard (19-4) took ninth at 106 pounds for Auburndale.
