WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Auburndale girls basketball team sent Wisconsin Rapids Assumption to its first Marawood Conference South Division loss of the season on Friday night, downing the Royals 42-40 at Assumption High School.

Auburndale led for most of the second half and held on at the end to snap Assumption’s six-game winning streak.

Kendall Duellman made a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to cut Auburndale’s lead to 41-40. Gracie Krings was fouled and made one of two free throws, and Assumption’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark as the Eagles held on.

Annamarie Aue and Ashlyn Grimm each scored 12 points to lead Auburndale, which is now 12-5 overall and 8-3 in the Marawood South as it posted its sixth win in its last seven games.

Assumption falls to 15-2 overall and 10-1 in the conference. Sarah Shaw led the Royals with 12 points.

Auburndale plays a nonconference game at Phillips on Tuesday and Marawood Conference crossover game next Friday at Prentice. Assumption will be at Athens on Thursday. Athens and Phillips are tied for the Marawood North lead at 10-1.
