WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Kyle Berres was part of four runner-up finishes and set a new school record for Marshfield as the Tigers placed third at the 2023 Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Swim Meet on Thursday at Lincoln High School.

D.C. Everest won all 11 swimming events, but with a limited roster, finished second in the team standings to a deeper Stevens Point squad that captured its fourth-straight WVC championship.

Stevens Point finished with 375.5 points, D.C. Everest was second with 339 and Marshfield third with 295.5.

Berres was second in the 50-yard freestyle, setting a new Marshfield school record time of 22.29 seconds, breaking a 44-year-old record of 22.63 set by Jim Merrill in 1979. Berres also was second in the 100 freestyle (49.05), and teamed with Simon Dagit, Carson Klumb and Henry Hilbelink to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.73), and with Klumb, Hilbelink and Zander Edmundson to take second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.19).

Marshfield’s Alik Martin won the diving competition with a score of 321.0, with teammate Shaun Hunter second with a score of 301.8.

Simon Dagit added fourth-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (56.49) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.25) as well for the Tigers.

Two D.C. Everest swimmers set new conference meet records. Camden Barwick set a new meet record in the 100 freestyle, winning in 47.98 seconds, which broke the record set by Danny Brebrick in 2009 of 48.09, and Keaton Barwick won the 100 backstroke in 53.56, topping the old mark set last year by Cade Casey of 54.09.

Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 sectional meet at Hudson on Saturday, Feb. 11.
