MADISON – Marshfield will be wrestling for its first-ever state championship after posting a pair of dominating wins on the first day of the 2023 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on Friday at the University of Wisconsin Field House.

No. 3 seed Marshfield routed No. 6 Mukwonago 47-14 and handled No. 2 Bay Port 43-25 to advance to the Division 1 finals for the first time in its seventh trip to the state tournament. The Tigers will take on No. 1 seed Kaukauna, the two-time defending state champion, at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Kaukauna, which also won four-straight D-1 titles from 2013-17, only lost one match in both duals, destroying Waukesha West 68-6 and Muskego 72-4 in its matches on Friday.

Marshfield made quick work of Mukwonago, winning the first six matches, four by pin.

Hoyt Blaskowski (145 pounds) and Caleb Dennee (152) each won with pins in the first period, Grayden Rode followed with a major decision at 160, and Garrett Willuweit (170) earned a pin 45 seconds into the second period to put the Tigers up 22-0.

Owen Griesbach won 13-7 at 182 and Mason Seidl had a pin at 195 before Mukwonago was able to stop the string.

The Tigers responded by winning the next two matches by decision – Adrian Kruger at 285 and Jon Sternweis at 106 – to clinch the victory. For good measure, Easton Ledden (126) and Brett Franklin (138) won to finish off the quarterfinal win.

In the semifinal match, Marshfield bumped up Blaskowski and Dennee a weight class to that they could start the match, as it began at 152 pounds. Both earned pins again to get the Tigers off and running.

Willuweit added another pin and Griesbach won a 13-5 major decision to put Marshfield on top 21-0 and the dual was never in doubt.

Clements, Kruger and Sternweis all won by decision, and Ledden and Franklin added pins for the Tigers to push them into the championship.

Division 2 and 3 semifinals will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., with all three championship duals slated for 3 p.m. Click here to view the matchups
