Columbus Catholic boys basketball pounds Almond-Bancroft in WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team will play for another regional title after it dismantled Almond-Bancroft 72-47 in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal Friday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The Dons rolled out to a 14-point lead by halftime at 37-23 and outscored Almond-Bancroft by 11 to finish off the win.

The No. 4 seed Columbus Catholic (19-7) will take on No. 1 seed Wausau Newman Catholic (22-4) for the D-5 regional title and a berth in next week’s sectionals on Saturday at Newman at 7 p.m. Columbus defeated Newman 65-59 in a hard-fought sectional semifinal last season. Charlie Moore poured in 21 points, Emmitt Konieczny added 20 and Blake Jakobi kicked in 17 for the Dons in the win.

Ayden Phillips scored 15 points to lead Almond-Bancroft, which finishes the season at 20-6.
