WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Stratford softball team managed just four hits in two games against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, the defending WIAA Division 5 state champions, and dropped both ends of the Marawood Conference South Division doubleheader on Tuesday at Robinson Park.
Assumption won the opener 7-0 and finished off the sweep with a 3-0 victory in its first games of the season. Stratford drops to 3-3 overall.
Assumption scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings of Game 1 to pull away for the 7-0 win.
Macy Vollert struck out five in six innings to earn the win for the Royals.
Ava Schill was dominant in the second game for Assumption, striking out 11 and allowed just one hit.
Laney Pankratz suffered the loss in both games for Stratford. She struck out five in four innings of the opening game and seven in a complete-game effort in Game 2.
The second game was scoreless until the Royals used an RBI single by Lydia Smits and an error to plate all three of their runs in the sixth inning.
Both teams will play nonconference games Friday with Stratford traveling to Nekoosa and Assumption hosting Tomahawk.
