Stratford, Auburndale split Marawood South softball doubleheader

AUBURNDALE – Samantha Stanton had a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to give the Auburndale softball team the lead and help the Eagles to a 5-3 win as they earned a split of a Marawood Conference South Division doubleheader against Stratford on Thursday at Auburndale High School.

Stratford won the opening game 5-0 before a dominant pitching performance by Laney Pankratz.

Pankratz struck out 11, walked only one and gave up just one hit to earn the victory.

The Tigers scored once in the opening inning and broke it open with a four-run fifth, keyed by a two-run double by Tessa Berg.

Auburndale pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the second game before Stratford battled back and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth after another two-run double by Berg.

The Eagles were able to forge ahead in the top of the seventh with four singles, including an RBI knock by Ashlyn Grimm to tie it and the game-winning hit by Stanton.

Grimm struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the win for the Eagles. She finished with eight strikeouts, and also had two hits and two RBI for Auburndale (9-3, 5-3 Marawood South).

Bailey Linzmaier and Berg both had two hits in each game for Stratford (10-5, 3-3 Marawood South).

Stratford will play a make-up game at Wausau Newman Catholic on Friday. Both teams will be in action next Tuesday as Auburndale is at Marathon and Stratford hosts Edgar.
