Marshfield baseball earns walk-off win over Wisconsin Rapids in wild WVC contest

MARSHFIELD – Mitchell Schade was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending home Owen Griesbach with the winning run as the Marshfield baseball team outlasted Wisconsin Rapids 14-13 in a wild Wisconsin Valley Conference baseball game Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield finished with 19 hits, eight for extra bases, and six players had at least two hits in the win. The Tigers are now 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, while Rapids falls to 13-3 and 3-3 in the Valley.

Marshfield led 10-2 after two innings before Rapids battled back. The Raiders scored four times in the fifth thanks to a two-RBI triple by Braden Lewis, to make it 13-12.

Rapids tied it in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Josh Dekarske.

Marshfield had the winning run on the second in the bottom of the frame after a double by Bennett Lang, but he was thrown out at home trying to score on Chase Robinson’s single and the game went to the eighth.

After Marshfield pitcher Carson Matis shut down Wisconsin Rapids in the top of the eighth, Griesbach led off the bottom of the frame with a double and Ben Dietsche followed with a single, his fourth hit of the game. Following an intentional walk, Schade was beaned to on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

Lang and Griesbach each had three hits, including two doubles apiece, and Adam Gilbertson had three hits and two RBI to lead the way for Marshfield.

Kaleb Ellis had a home run and three RBI, and Brennan Huber had three hits for Wisconsin Rapids.

Marshfield plays a nonconference doubleheader at Chippewa Falls on Saturday.
