MARSHFIELD – For the second time in a week, the Marshfield boys hockey team suffered a gut-wrenching loss.

A week after the Tigers couldn’t take care of a two-goal lead in the third period of a loss at D.C. Everest, they couldn’t hold on to a one-goal lead late and fell 2-1 in overtime to Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice Recreation Center.

Marshfield took a 1-0 lead when Schuyler Seyfert scored with 3 minutes left in the first period and it looked like it would hold up the rest of the way as the Tigers dominated the puck most of the game.

However, Wisconsin Rapids got one solid shot on goal late and made it count. Jake Bord slipped on past Marshfield freshman goalie Mac Alboreo with just 2:42 left in the third period to tie the score at 1-1.

Raiders goalie Cole Paulsen survived a barrage of shots from Marshfield in the final 40 seconds and the game went to overtime.

At the 4:20 mark of the extra eight-minute period, Caleb Schroer scored to give Wisconsin Rapids (2-6, 2-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) the victory. Marshfield falls to 1-5, 0-3 in the WVC.

“This one really hurts, especially after last Thursday we lost a two-goal lead late in the third, and lost this one,” Marshfield coach Mike Henke said. “I thought we played pretty well most of the game. We outshot them pretty heavily (31-18), we have to do a better job of getting better quality chances. We kind of got on our heels until they scored, and then found our life again. We can’t do that, we can’t wait until they score.”

Marshfield returns to action Tuesday on the road against Stevens Point, and Henke isn’t sure how the Tigers will react after a second consecutive tough loss.

“We have a very young team,” Henke said. “Hopefully they’re young enough that they don’t have too much emotion yet. There are a lot of sad faces up there (in the locker room), but we’ll find out, I guess. We come back Tuesday against Point and hopefully we’ll have a better result.”
