MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic baseball team clinched second place in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division standings with a doubleheader sweep of Gilman on Friday at Safford Field at Marshfield High School.
The Dons won 13-3 and 9-4 to improve to 13-7 overall and 9-2 in the Cloverbelt East. Columbus will wrap up its regular season next week with a nonconference game at home against Marathon on Monday and a Cloverbelt East matchup at Owen-Withee on Tuesday.
In Game 1, Blake Jakobi struck out eight over five innings, and had three hits and scored three times for the Dons.
Columbus Catholic was able to put away the win with a seven-run fourth inning.
Emmitt Konieczny added three hits and two RBI, and Mac Konieczny had two hits and three RBI as well in the win for Columbus.
The Dons scored three times in the top of the first inning of Game 2 and held on the rest of the way as Nathan Nemitz and Emmitt Konieczny combined on a six-hitter.
Cy Becker and Grant Olson each had two RBI in the victory.
