Stratford, Spencer, Auburndale, Columbus Catholic all earn state berths at WIAA Division 3 Marathon Track Sectional

MARATHON – The Stratford boys won the team title and will send three individuals and two relay teams to the state meet after competition at a WIAA Division 3 Track & Field Sectional on Thursday at Marathon High School.

Conner Weigel won the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 9¼ inches, and Payton Glenn was first in the long jump with a jump of 20-10½ for Stratford’s two individual sectional titles as the Tigers won the team crown with 71 points, six better than Shiocton.

In all, the Stratford boys will have three athletes compete in five events, as well as two relay teams, and the Stratford girls will also have a relay team moving on to the 2023 WIAA State Track & Field Championship at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on June 2-3. The top four finishers in each sectional event qualify for the state meet.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic had one boy qualify for state as Cal Birkhauser took second in the 200 in 2:01.44.

The Spencer boys had one individual advance as well as two relay teams, and Auburndale had one boys relay team and one girl in an individual event qualify for state.

The Stratford boys won another sectional title as the 400-meter relay team of Glenn, Austin O’Neil, Coltan Breit and Jett Schonherr, who ran in 43.85 seconds.

Weigel also moves on in the 400 (second, 51.42), Schoenherr qualified individually in both the 100 (second, 11.45) and 200 (fourth, 23.56), and the 1,600 relay team of Weigel, Xander Curtice, Lance Krieg and Garrett Zuelke took third in 3:33.93 to also earn a spot in the state meet.

The Stratford girls lone state qualifier was the 3,200 relay team of Ella Heidmann, Kayla Casperson, Breleigh Skaya and Kaylie McHugh, which took fourth place in 10:20.06.

Auburndale’s state qualifiers are Lilly Hasenhorl in the girls discus (fourth, 112 feet, 4 inches), and the 3,200 relay team of Ian Grosskopf, Charles Jewell, Adam Kundinger and Mason White Eagle that finished fourth in 8:33.99.

The Spencer relay team of Johnathon Jonas, Landon Behselich, Levi Anderson and Elliott Bauer took second in the 400 relay in 44.66 seconds and was fourth in the 800 relay in 1:34.84. Also moving on for the Rockets is Breckin Miller, who placed third in the pole vault (13-0).
