Strong first quarter lifts Edgar past Stratford in Marawood South girls basketball game

STRATFORD – Edgar jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter and held off a late run to defeat Stratford 37-32 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Tuesday night at Stratford High School.

The Wildcats (4-2, 2-2 Marawood South) led 13-3 after one quarter and 19-9 at halftime. Stratford closed the gap in half in the second half, but couldn’t pull off the comeback.

Carrie Stroetz had 13 points to lead Stratford, which falls to 2-3 and 1-3 in the Marawood South.

Faryn Wirkus led a balanced attack for Edgar with 10 points. Holly Denfeld added eight points and nine rebounds.

Stratford will play at the Almond-Bancroft Tournament on Dec. 28-29 and at Amherst on Jan. 4 before returning to Marawood South competition on Jan. 11 at first-place Wausau Newman Catholic.
