Columbus Catholic, Stratford each have two advance to state cross country after top-10 finishes at WIAA Division 3 sectional

COLBY – Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Stratford each had two runners advance to the state meet after earning top-10 finishes at the WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional on Saturday at Colby High School.

Columbus Catholic junior Isaac Scheer placed second (16:39.5) and his brother, freshman Nathan Scheer, took sixth (17:19.4) in the boys 5-kilometer race to earn spots in next week’s WIAA state meet.

Stratford juniors Cree Defoe and Kayla Casperson will also run at state after DeFoe finished fifth in the boys race in 17:19.4 and Casperson was seventh in the girls 5K in 21:04.4.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams in both the boys and girls races qualify for the 2023 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Iola-Scandinaiva’s Charlie Vater won the boys race in 16:04.4, 35 seconds ahead of Isaac Scheer, who will be making his third-straight state appearance.

Stevens Point Pacelli won the boys team title, with Iola-Scandinavia second to earn the two state berths. Columbus Catholic was fifth, Stratford sixth, Auburndale 13th and Spencer 16th.

James Binder led Auburndale, taking 45th in 19:30.5, and Isaac Howlett was Spencer’s top runner, finishing 51st in 19:56.2.

Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Colby wrapped up the two girls team spots at state, with Stratford taking third, just four points behind Colby. Kressa Wenzel took 15th (21:43.9) and Breleigh Skaya was 18th (22:01.5) for the Tigers.

Auburndale finished fifth, Columbus Catholic 12th and Spencer 15th.

Abby Wojcik led the Dons with a 16th-place finish in 21:50.0, nine seconds in front of Auburndale’s top finisher, Rose Hasenohrl, who placed 17th in 21:59.4.
