Six local runners take part in 2023 WIAA State Cross Country Championships

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Marshfield Columbus Catholic junior Isaac Scheer earned a top-10 finish at the 2023 WIAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Ridges Golf Course.

Scheer, running in his third consecutive state meet, finished sixth in the Division 3 boys 5-kilometer race in 16:18.4, 29 seconds behind the winner, Charlie Vater of Iola-Scandinavia.

Scheer improved on his time from last year by nearly one minute. He finished 21st in 17:11.2 last season and 46th in 17:58 as a freshman in 2021.

Five other local runners took part in the state meet.

Stratford junior Cree DeFoe placed 39th in 17:22.7 in his second state appearance, while Nathan Scheer, a freshman for Columbus Catholic, took 63rd in 17:54.0, as both also ran in the Division 3 boys race. DeFoe bettered his finish of 73rd (18:12.7) from last year.

Stratford’s Kayla Casperson was the lone local runner in the girls Division 3 race and she took 41st place in 20:42.5. Autumn Michalski of Chequamegon won in 18:02.0, with Kohler freshman Maggie Behler a distance second, 53 seconds behind.

Marshfield had two runners at the state meet, junior Owen Hoerneman and sophomore Natalie Scharebroch.

Hoerneman finished 147th out of the 190 runners in the Division 1 boys race, running in 17:34.6.

Stevens Point rolled to the team title, its second in a row, with four runners finishing in the top 11. Aloysius Franzen was second (16:09.7), Ethan Olds sixth (15:44.8), Cooper Erickson eighth (15:47.2) and Graham Ballard 11th (15:57.9).

Onalaska’s Manny Putz won the D-1 boys individual title in 15:05.8.

Scharenbroch, running in her second-straight state meet, finished 74th in 20:07.5. She placed 40th in 19:56.6 last year.

Slinger won the Division 1 girls team title, Xavier repeated as the Division 2 girls state champion, and Lancaster won the D-3 state crown.

In addition to Stevens Point, Kohler won its second-straight Division 3 boys team title and Lakeside Lutheran was the D-3 boys team champion.
