Wonewoc-Center sweeps Columbus Catholic in WIAA Division 4 girls volleyball sectional final

CASHTON – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s run toward its first state tournament berth ended a win short as the Dons were swept by Wonewoc-Center 3-0 in a WIAA Division 4 sectional final Saturday night at Cashton High School.

The Wolves won 25-15, 25-17, 25-21, to advance to the state tournament later this week in Green Bay.

“We had a great season this year and lost to a very talented team,” Columbus Catholic coach Kat Egle said. “We fought hard until the end. We have a lot to be proud of this season and made so many great memories. We will miss the seniors so much as they brought leadership and teamwork to the team. Thank you to all of our fans and all of their support season.”

Wonewoc-Center got off to quick starts in all three sets, with Columbus Catholic unable to counter in the first two.

The Dons made a strong run in the third set. Down 16-13, Columbus scored six points in a row, five on the serve of Shelby Spata, to take a 19-16 lead.

However, the Wolves came back to score nine of the next 11 points to finish off the victory.

Courtney Sommer and Aliyah Krenn each had seven kills, Emma Dolgner had six blocks and Aubrey Waldhauser had five blocks for the Columbus front line.

Alayna Egle had 11 assists, Sommer added eight assists and eight digs, Mattea Schlafke had a team-high 10 digs, and Delia Trader also had eight digs for the Dons.

Wonewoc-Center, making its third-straight trip to state, will play Fall River in a Division 4 semifinal at the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament on Friday at 9 a.m. at Resch Center in Green Bay. Wausau Newman Catholic and Prentice will play in the other semifinal, with the winners playing for the D-4 state title Saturday at 9 a.m.
