MARSHFIELD – Sophomore Chris Pohl kept Marshfield close early, the Tigers closed the half on a big run and kept its perfect season going with a 62-50 win over D.C. Everest in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys basketball game Friday night at Fredrick Construction Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

Pohl made four 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes and scored 16 of Marshfield’s first 18 points, which placed them in an 18-18 tie with 8 minutes to go in the half.

After a D.C. Everest free throw, Marshfield finished the half on an 18-7 run to take a 10-point advantage and led the rest of the way.

A dunk by Valin Ramberg started the run, Brant Freis hit a 3-pointer and Ramberg connected on another to start the run.

Landon Lee added six points and Brooks Hinson made two free throws to put the Tigers up 36-26 at intermission.

“Chris shot it very, very well right off the bat, but he’s a good shooter so it wasn’t entirely a surprise,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said. “He puts a lot of time and effort into his game.

“I thought Joey Ketterer gave us some good minutes in the first half as it was kind of a back-and-forth. I don’t think anything is going to show up in the box score, he didn’t score a point, but whatever it was, when he was in, the five on the floor were better.”

Both teams exchanged baskets for the first eight minutes of the second half, with Pohl’s sixth 3-pointer putting Marshfield on top 51-38.

D.C. Everest used an 8-3 run that included four points from Xavier Edwards and baskets by Cohen Priebe and freshman Vander Truax, but the Evergreens would only score four points during the final five minutes and Marshfield closed out the victory.

Pohl finished with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds, and Lee ended up with 17 points for Marshfield (5-0, 2-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

“We had some difficulty guarding them individually,” Fischer said. “A guy like (Cohen) Priebe, scoring 20 a game, we’re going to key on him and Brooks (Hinson) guarded him very well. He guarded Brooks really well. We definitely had our hands full defensively, fortunately we made enough stops and enough shots on the other end to keep our lead.”

Casey Stuedemann had 15 points and five rebounds, and Edwards added 12 points for the Evergreens (3-4, 1-1 WVC).

Marshfield hosts Neenah for a nonconference game Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
