WAUSAU – Marshfield High School junior Ava Gardner competed at the Wisconsin Girls Challenge Series tournament at Wausau West last Saturday, winning the 100-pound bracket in dominating fashion.

Gardner pinned four-straight opponents, two in less than 1½ minutes, to reach the finals where she won by a 19-0 technical fall over Savanna Millemon of Glenwood City.

The Wisconsin Girls Challenge Series win for Gardner is the first ever by a Marshfield girl.

Gardner, who is a starter at 106 pounds for the Marshfield varsity team, is currently the third-ranked girl in the state at 107 pounds, but plans on dropping to 100 pounds for the WIAA state tournament series.

Marshfield will wrap up its regular season on Thursday with a dual meet at home against Merrill. The Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament will be at Stevens Point on Feb. 3.
