Wisconsin Rapids upsets Marshfield girls basketball

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield girls basketball team’s bid for a fifth straight Wisconsin Valley Conference title took a serious blow Thursday night as it was upset by Wisconsin Rapids 56-52 at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.

Marshfield drops out of a first-place tie with Stevens Point, which won 50-39 Thursday against Wausau West, with one conference game remaining. The Tigers (16-5, 9-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) hosts Merrill next Thursday, while Stevens Point (10-1 WVC) plays at D.C. Everest.

Wisconsin Rapids falls to 13-8 and 7-5 in the conference.

Marshfield shot just 30 percent (17 of 56) from the field and missed 11 of 23 free throw attempts in the loss.

Wisconsin Rapids shot 50 percent from the field (21 of 42).

Taylor Varsho scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers.

Nicole Slovensky scored 18 poitns and Elizabeth Morrison had 14 points (5 of 6 shooting) and five rebounds to lead Wisconsin Rapids.
