Marshfield’s Dan Kniech wins both hurdles races at WIAA Division 1 Merrill track regional

WAUSAU – Dan Kniech won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles and led a contingent of four Marshfield boys who qualified in seven events for Thursday’s sectional meet on Monday at the WIAA Division 1 Track Regional at Wausau West High School.

The Marshfield girls also had four individual qualifiers and three relay teams move on. The Tigers boys also had a pair of relays finish in the top four at the Merrill regional, which qualifies them for Thursday’s sectional at Wausau East.

The top three finishers at the sectional qualify for the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on June 3-4 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Kniech won the 110 hurdles in 15.16 seconds and also took gold in the 300 hurdles, winning in 40.48 seconds.

Jeremy Robinson and Keron Howlett also qualified for the sectional in two individual events.

Robinson won the 200 meters in 22.53 seconds and took second in the triple jump with leap of 43 feet.

Howlett was second in the long jump (21-4.5) and third in the 110 hurdles (15.81).

Riley Gebelein rounded out the Tigers’ individual qualifiers, taking second in the 100 (11.21).

The Marshfield boys 400 relay team of Logan Schmitz, Gebelein, Howlett and Robinson won the regional title in a time of 43.34 seconds. The same team finished second in the 800 relay, finishing in 1:31.54.

The Marshfield girls had a pair of relays win regional titles.

The 400 relay team of Alexa Fritsch, Gabrielle Myrie, Nikki Youngblood and Bisola Omoba won in 51.40 seconds, and the same four combined to win the 800 relay in 1:48.29.

Fritsch, Amanda Cousins, Omoba and Youngblood also qualified in the 1,600 relay, finishing in 4:16.49.

Individually, Myrie was second in the 100 (12.95), Cousins was third in the 400 (1:04.31), Rebecca Voss took third in the 3,200 (11:33.73) and Yasmeena Ougayour took fourth in the discus (107-4).

D.C. Everest won the boys team title with 171.5 points, with Marshfield second with 109.5.

Wausau West won the girls title with 138.5 points, just 10.5 points ahead of second-place Everest. Marshfield was sixth with 74.5 points.
