PARK FALLS – Auburndale defeated Chequamegon 36-34 in a Marawood Conference football thriller Friday night at Chequamegon High School.

The victory keeps the Apaches’ WIAA playoff hopes intact, improving their record to 2-4 overall and in the Marwood. Chequamegon falls to 1-5 and 1-4 in the Marawood.

Auburndale hosts Neillsville in a nonconference game next Friday, then must win at Phillips on Oct. 7 and at home against Pittsville on Oct. 14 to have a chance to qualify for the postseason for the second year in a row. The two wins would put Auburndale at 4-4 in the Marawood, and with a .500 record in conference, would be under consideration for postseason play by the WIAA. Only teams that finish above .500 in conference play are assured on a playoff berth.

Auburndale sophomore quarterback Blake Anderson continued his strong first season as the Apaches’ signal call. He completed 16 of 31 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns, while running for another score.

Anderson’s 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter pushed Auburndale’s lead to 36-28 at the time. Chequamegon added a score but missed the two-point attempt to lose by two points.

Austin Hawkins caught three touchdown passes from Anderson.
