MERRILL – Matt McCann had his first career hat trick to lead the Marshfield boys soccer team to a 4-1 win over Merrill in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday.

Quinn Schuster scored at the 20:15 mark of the first half and McCann added his first goal 3:01 later to put Marshfield up 2-0.

After Merrill’s Paul Theorin scored 7:54 into the second half to cut the Tigers’ lead in half, McCann scored a pair of goals less than 2 minutes apart to provide Marshfield with some cushion.

“It was nice to see the team get on the scoreboard four times today,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “We had a lot of very good passing. Our passing has improved over our last couple of games. We minimized our mistakes today, which is what hurt us in our last few games (a pair of 4-0 losses).”

Marshfield completed the season sweep of Merrill, improving to 6-9-2 overall and 4-6 in the Valley. Merrill drops to 1-11 and 0-10 in conference.

Marshfield hosts D.C. Everest at Griese Park at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
