John Smoltz to receive Nice Guy Award at Red Smith Sports Award Banquet in Appleton

APPLETON – Former Major League all-star pitcher and Cy Young Award winner John Smoltz will receive the 2012 Scheels Sports Nice Guy Award at the 47th annual Red Smith Sports Award Banquet on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton.

Smoltz will join main speaker Lesley Visser at the head table. The Red Smith Award recipient will be announced in the near future.

Smoltz is one of only two pitchers to both have a 20-win season and a 50-save season (Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley is the other). He is only the pitcher in MLB history to have 200 wins and 150 saves, and became the 16th member of the 3,000 strikeout club in 2008. Smoltz pitched for the Atlanta Braves from 1988-2008 and finishing his 21-year career with the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals in 2009.

Smoltz pitched in 41 postseason games, 40 with Atlanta, going 15-4 with a 2.67 ERA and four saves. He was 213-155 with a 3.33 ERA, 3,074 strikeouts and had 154 saves in the regular season in his career.
