Stratford boys, Auburndale girls each have three champions at WIAA Division 3 track and field regional

STRATFORD – Four local teams competed at the WIAA Division 3 Track & Field Regional at Tiger Stadium on Monday and will be sending a slew of athletes on to Thursday’s sectional at Rosholt.

Auburndale, Spencer, Marshfield Columbus Catholic and host Stratford will have numerous entries at the sectional after a number of top-four finishes at the regional.

Among the winners for the girls were Auburndale’s 3,200 relay team of Danica Harrison, Abby Bauer, Sam Karl and Emma Steines (10:30.62), and Harrison in 3,200 (12:16.99), and Stratford’s Abby Bender in the high jump (5 feet).

Auburndale had four other individual qualifiers – Harrison was second in the 1,600 (5:39.80), Bauer was second to Harrison in the 3,200 (12:57.48), and Steines took third in the 200 (28.54) and fourth in the triple jump (31-9.75).

Bender, in addition to her high jump win, joined Brooke Schultze, Josie Kolbeck and Tori Dietel on the 800 relay team that placed second (1:49.34) and the 400 relay team that was fourth (52.60), and Schultze, Kolbeck and Julia Boushon on the 1,600 relay team that finished third (4:25.47).

Danielle Leffel was the only other Tiger to gain an individual spot in sectionals by placing third in both the 800 (2:40.01) and the 1,600 (6:00.85).

The Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Spencer girls did not have any regional champions, but both teams have a number of sectional qualifiers.

For Columbus, Elizabeth Manlick took second in the 400 (1:03.03) and third in the long jump (15-3.25), and Katy Jensen was third in the 300 hurdles (52.41) and fourth in the high jump (4-6).

Also qualifying for the Dons were Hannah Kruse (fourth in the discus, 92-8), Mariah Heiman (third in the 100, 13.38), and three relay teams. Riley Roehl, Nikki Hertel, Lian Schneider and Alexandria Viegut was third in the 3,200 relay (11:08.58), and the team of Hieman, Roehl, Hannah Stratman and Kayla Selz was second in the 400 relay (52.02) and third in the 800 relay (1:51.63).

Spencer freshman Rachel Zastrow qualified for sectionals in three individual events and on a relay team. Zastrow was second in the 300 hurdles (51.28) and the pole vault (9-0), and took third in the 100 hurdles (17.79). Zastrow, Sam Fuehrer, Paige Lawrence and Jordyn Wichlacz took fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:43.02) to also move on to sectionals.

Also qualifying for the Spencer girls were Abby Varsho (third in the high jump, 4-8) and Lawrence in the 400 (1:06.57).

The Stratford boys had three regional champions and had six individuals qualify in 11 events, and three relay teams that will move on to sectionals.

Jacob Zuelke won the 3,200 in 10:58.31 and placed second in both the 1,600 (5:07.76) and 800 (2:06.55) for the Tigers.

Jake Griffith won the pole vault (13-6) and took fourth in the long jump (19-2.5), and the 800 relay team of Dylan Kell, Kellen Bornbach, Eli Temanson and Jake Guyer won in 1:34.32 for Stratford.

Others qualifying for sectionals from Stratford were Kell (third in the 100, 11.82), Derek Dehlinger (second in the 400, 57.83), Temanson (second in the 200, 23.23, and second in the pole vault, 13-6) and Troy Mengel (second in the discus, 134-2, and third in the shot put, 42-9). The 1,600 relay team of Phil Sersch, Jake Guyer, Joel Rotar and Eric Belter was second (3:52.18) and the 3,200 relay team of Henry Uthmeier, Sam Guyer, Karl Strickland and Alex Hein was fourth (10:30.39).

Spencer’s Josh Olson was second in the triple jump (40-5.5) and Dan Schubert took third in the 110 hurdles (18.78) for the Rockets boys’ lone individual sectional qualifiers.

The Rockets also had two relay teams take fourth. The 800 team of Austin Mueller, Rudy Nieman, Olson and Schubert (1:42.46) and the 400 team of Tyler Stelson, Dan Wilke, Chris Larson and Kyle Andreae (58.57) will move on to sectionals.

Auburndale had four individuals qualify in five events. Isaac Castellano was third in both the 800 (2:07.30) and the high jump (5-10), Jacob Hunsberger was third in the 3,200 (11:16.83), Shane Hoffmann tied for third in the pole vault (10-6) and Tom Sabel was fourth in the triple jump (39-8.5).

Marshfield Columbus Catholic won one event and had three individuals finish in the top four. The Dons’ 3,200 relay team of David Cleveland, Eric Anderson, Tyler Derfus and Travis Wienke won that event in 8:44.13, and will be joined at sectionals by Samual Studinger (third in the 400, 58.46), Chrisitan Payant (third in the 300 hurdles, 44.90), and Sean McCarthy (fourth in the 110 hurdles, 19.37).
