STEVENS POINT – Marshfield outshot Stevens Point 16-11, had six corner kicks to the Panthers’ zero, but couldn’t find the back of the net and lost 3-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer game Tuesday.

Stevens Point clinched the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with the victory, improving to 17-1-1 overall and 11-1 in the WVC. Marshfield drops to 11-6-2 and 5-6 in the Valley.

The Tigers can end up third in the conference standings with a win at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday – their regular-season finale.

Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said two of Stevens Point’s goals were caused by mistakes made by the Tigers.

“We stepped in and took ourselves out of position on one goal and on another we just misplayed the ball. It really should have been 1-0,” Lindner said. “The coaches are disappointed in the loss but in retrospect we did try some things that seemed to cause more confusion that we would have liked.

“We needed to start thinking towards the playoffs a little but it kind of backfired on us. I will take responsibility for that.”

Jala Zahn had six saves in goal for Marshfield, while Sarah Peplinski saved 10 shots for the Panthers.
