WAUSAU – Wausau West scored five times in the bottom of the first inning and Marshfield couldn’t recover, losing its Wisconsin Valley Conference and regular-season finale to the Warriors 15-6 on Thursday.

The Warriors led 7-1 after two innings and after Marshfield scored three times in the third and once in the fourth to close the gap, West poured on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth and won going away.

Marshfield had 11 hits against Wausau West pitcher Sammy Laatsch, but many came with two outs, Marshfield coach Mike Voss said, keeping the Tigers from scoring more.

“We came up with some big hits but couldn’t do it consistently enough,” Voss said. “When you are getting most of your hits with two outs, you are living dangerously.”

Taylor Hasz, Katie Treankler and Caitlin Kozik each had two hits for the Tigers (5-16, 2-10 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Kozik and Kelsey Kuehnhold combined for nine strikeouts for the Tigers, but also 12 walks that proved costly in the loss.

Marshfield opens WIAA postseason action with a Division 1 regional semifinal at Merrill on Tuesday.
