WISCONSIN RAPIDS – It took two days but the Marshfield girls soccer team finally beat Wisconsin Rapids.

Marshfield scored twice Thursday before play was suspended by lightning. When play resumed Friday, Rapids quickly tied the game before Darian Molter scored from 25 yards out midway through the second half to lift the Tigers to a 3-2 win – Marshfield’s first ever win over Wisconsin Rapids in girls soccer.

“This was great for the girls and they were excited for the opportunity to do something that had never before been done,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The girls have been playing well all season and aside for two games with SPASH, we have lost the other games by one goal each. This was a nice win to propel us into the playoffs which start next week Thursday.”

Molter scored off an assist from Emily Wolfe 5:58 into the game and Alison Gruen added a goal on a pass from Mardie Shanahan at 17:24 to give the Tigers a quick 2-0 lead.

The game was suspended by lightening at the 22:30 mark of the first half and postponed to Friday.

The play resumed. Morgan Elzinga scored twice in an 8-minute span to tie the game before halftime.

Marshfield (12-6-2, 6-6 Wisconsin Valley Conference) ends up with 18 points on conference play, one ahead of Wisconsin Rapids (7-9-3, 5-5-2 WVC) for third place.

Marshfield was given a No. 5 seed in the upcoming WIAA playoffs and will host Menomonie (6-14-2) in a Division 1 regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
