WAUSAU – The Marshfield volleyball team established itself as one the team to beat for the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship as it went 3-0 at the first WVC tournament of the season on Saturday at Wausau East High School.
Marshfield swept D.C. Everest 25-22, 25-13, 25-19, and Stevens Point 25-21, 25-19, 30-28, and sweated out a five-game victory over Merrill 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8, to improve to 5-0 in the conference.
Wausau East, which had been unbeaten in three WVC matches so far this season, went 0-2, which pushes Marshfield into sole possession of first place in the conference standings. East lost five-set matches to Stevens Point and Merrill.
“This was a huge day for us,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “We knew we had a tough schedule, and we showed so much character and what this team is made of throughout the day. Winning the five-set match over Merrill was awesome, and I am so proud of our entire team as they never gave up on themselves or one another.”
Tiffany Stargardt had 50 kills, Courtney Bauer collected 70 assists and nine block kills, and Darian Molter had five service aces and 53 digs to lead Marshfield in each category.
Mikala Sebastian added 33 kills, Bauer had 20 kills, Miranda Forrest had eight block kills and Stargardt chipped in with 40 digs for the Tigers.
Marshfield plays at Wausau East on Thursday in its next Wisconsin Valley Conference match.
The second and final WVC tournament will be Oct. 13 at Marshfield.
