MADISON – Three local athletes earned medals Saturday at the 2013 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Marshfield sophomore Mitch Hertel defeated Brook Whitehead of Wausau East 8-2 in a consolation match to reach the third-place match at 138 pounds in Division 1. Hertel then dropped a 3-1 decision to Jake Cain (52-2) of Middleton to end up fourth in the tournament.
Hertel, making his second straight state appearance, finishes the season with a 32-9 record.
In Division 3, a pair of Stratford wrestlers also earned medals with top-six finishes, but both came after difficult losses in the consolation semifinals.
Freshman Anthony Gliniecki lost 5-3 in triple overtime to Nick Burns of La Crosse Aquinas, then dropped a 6-0 decision to Jon Mudlaff of Random Lake in the fifth-place match to end up sixth at 106 pounds.
Gliniecki, who defeated Mudlaff 5-2 in the quarterfinals, ends up 36-10 for the season.
Dondrick Tackes (39-3) also lost his consolation semifinal in triple overtime, losing to Derek Peat of Iowa-Grant/Highland 3-1. Tackes recovered to beat Austin Hoeg of Greendale Martin Luther 5-0 to take fifth place in the 195-pound bracket. Tackes lost to Hoeg 7-6 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Championship matches are set for 6 p.m. Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
