Marshfield boys hockey comes up just short against Rhinelander

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield scored twice in an exciting third period but couldn’t overcome a two-goal deficit and fell 3-2 in a nonconference boys hockey game to Rhinelander on Tuesday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice and Recreation Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Rhinelander took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Kyle Loher with 3:46 remaining in the second.

The Hodags added to their lead with a goal 2:15 into the third by Calin Erdmann, but Marshfield quickly countered when Zach Leggon scored just 11 seconds later to make it 2-1.

Rhinelander (1-0) again went up by two on another goal by Loher.

The Tigers cut their deficit to one when Andy Wittman scored on a power play with 2:20 left in the game, but couldn’t muster another goal against Rhinelander goalie Jacob Anro, who had 35 saves.

Brad Krueger had 15 saves for the Tigers (0-3).

Marshfield plays at Tomahawk on Thursday.
