SHAWANO – Dondrick Tackes won the 195-pound championship and five other Stratford wrestlers qualified for the state meet after finishing in the top three at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional Saturday at Shawano High School.
Tackes improved to 32-1 this season after sweeping his three matches. Tackes won the title by injury default over Edgar’s Wesley Dittman and will be going to the state tournament for the second year in a row.
Five other Stratford wrestlers took second and will also move on to the 2014 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 27-March 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Anthony Gliniecki lost just his second match of the season, falling in the 113-pound championship to Jordan Blanchard of Coleman 7-6. Gliniecki, a sophomore, is now 41-2 and will be making his second-straight trip to the state tournament.
Also placing second for Stratford were Sam Wenzel (33-10 at 106 pounds), Phil Sersch (37-7 at 120), Alex Heiden (38-5 at 126) and Kamren Bornbach (39-6 at 182).
Wenzel lost to Auburndale’s Dylan Altmann 2-0 in the 106-pound championship match.
Altmann (22-10) is one of two Auburndale wrestlers to qualify for state. Wyatt Weiler placed second at 152 pounds, losing 6-4 in overtime to Dan Tauchen of Bonduel in the championship match. Weiler (33-5) will be making his second-straight trip to state.
Spencer had one qualifier, Trevor Ackman, who took third at 145 pounds. Ackman, a senior, will be going to state for the third time. He won the third-place match 3-2 over Alec Smith of Elcho.
Division 3 preliminaries will be held starting at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
