MARSHFIELD – Elliot Ashbeck, a 2012 graduate of Marshfield High School and a pitcher at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., was chosen in the 16th round (477th pick overall) of the Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
Ashbeck recently completed his junior season at Bradley, going 11-5 with a 3.55 earned-run average in 17 starts. He also batted .264 in 36 games, with 13 doubles and 31 RBIs, and earned second-team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors as the Braves reached the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 1968.
Bradley (36-21) went 1-2 at the Louisville Regional before being bounced from the tournament with a 4-3 loss to Michigan on May 31.
Ashbeck was the starting pitcher of the Braves’ opener of the tournament, allowing six runs and eight hits in three innings while suffering the loss in a 10-5 defeat to Michigan.
Ashbeck went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI in a 9-4 victory over Morehead State, and was 0-for-3 in the second loss to Michigan.
On Tuesday, Ashbeck was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first team, which was voted on by the eight baseball sports information departments of the conference.
Ashbeck had a 3.33 grade-point average as a business management and administration major, and graduated from Bradley last month, completing his degree in just three years.
