First-place Wausau East blanks Marshfield boys tennis

MARSHFIELD – Wausau East swept all seven matches in straight sets to remain undefeated in Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meets and beat Marshfield 7-0 on Thursday in boys tennis action at the Boson Courts at Marshfield High School.

East improves to 5-0 in the Valley, while Marshfield drops to 1-3 with just a pair of dual meets left on its schedule.

Marshfield’s Nick Ackerman battled tough at No. 1 singles against East’s Bryan Miles, losing the first set 7-5, however he had to retire from the match trailing 5-0 in the second set to fall to 2-2 this season in Valley meets.

Marshfield’s top two doubles teams also lost 7-5 in hard-fought first sets.

East’s Mike Macalad and Sam Gritzmacher beat the Tigers’ Alex Boson and Taylor Moon 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Damon Cole and Kurt Hermanson defeated Marshfield’s Dan Bargander and Carter Havican 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Both of the Marshfield doubles teams are now 1-3 in WVC dual meets.

Marshfield is at D.C. Everest on Tuesday and at home against Wausau West next Thursday to wrap up its Valley regular season. The Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament is Thursday, May 20 at Wausau East.
